Tourniquets and Haemostatic Dressings

The HSE has advised that when carrying out a first aid needs assessment, employers who identify a specific risk of life-threatening bleeding (e.g. those working in arboriculture, construction, glass work, agriculture or those who use dangerous machinery) should consider providing tourniquets and haemostatic dressings and ensure that their workplace first aiders are trained in their use.

The recent European Resuscitation Council (ERC) First Aid Guildelines 2015 state that when direct pressure cannot control severe bleeding, haemostatic dressings and tourniquets are to be used. In the light of these guidelines this training is now included in our Level 3 Award in First Aid at Work and Level 2 Award in Emergency First Aid at Work qualifications.
